The Herb Garret

The Oldest Operating Theatre in Britain was located in the roof space of St Thomas’s Church in the grounds of St Thomas’s Hospital in London. In 1867 the theatre was closed down (on Florence Nightingale’s advice) and boarded up. It remained hidden and untouched for nearly 100 years when it was re-discovered by Raymond Russell during some research into St Thomas’s history. The theatre has now been renovated for all to see. There are also loads of links about the history of surgery and medicine in general as well as virtual tours of the building.
