The Shape of Song
Now this is right up my street…The Shape of Song is an online application that analyses the repeated content of MIDI files and then shows graphical representations using translucent arches to join the repeated passages. There’s an official explanation of how it works as well as a small gallery of images or you can go straight there and load up a tune. It’s fascinating to see the beauty in both the complicated and the simple tracks, check out the complexity of the Ben Folds Five and the symmetry of Bjorks individual tracks respectively. There are quite a few tunes to explore already and you can easily add your own MIDI tracks onto their database for viewing. [via]

Update (same day!) It’s official, I have now spent far too much time looking at these images, I’m concerned that I may become an Shape Of Song obsessive. Is it just me or are these images infinitely interesting? Another way to appreciate music in my opinion. I’ve never thought that Blitzkrieg Pop by the Ramones sounded complicated but it sure looks it! Anyway, back to the site!

I don’t know how you find this stuff but that is very cool.
