Did anyone ever try to grow carrots on plates from the carrot tops when they were kids?..Well I did and I was never very successful. However, I’ve never been put off by failure and continued to try new techniques until my dream of success came true this month. What I found is that after the leaves grow most people get bored and stop watering and talking to their carrot, this is their big mistake, continued patience is the key to a healthy new carrot. Things normally start to hot up on the forth or fifth day after the carrot growth appears to have ceases (see picture below), a little more water, a few choice words and the real magic begins. The carrot begins to grow steadily upward and onward. It’s best to place the carrot in a place out of the wind as the higher it grows the thinner the base become, which makes the carrot very unstable, an un-planned fall at this point will just ruin the flavour (if you’re not worried about the flavour then you’re looking at the wrong web page…go to Tescos.com). Anyways, any cared for carrot will eventually fall once the base is about 2 - 4 mm across and this is the best time to pick it up from the plate, put it in your mouth and eat it!
