Francis Bacon - Art Sampler?
I’ve just finished watching a piece on the Culture Show about Francis Bacon. The piece mainly focused on the original source material that Bacon used not only as inspiration but also to actually copy in places. He used other artists photos in many ways, even to the point of cutting them out and using them as stencils to paint around. It was interesting to hear people discussing the reuse (sampling) without trying to justify it in any way. Anyways, the point I was going to make is that it’s interesting how the art world (at least the art world that I understand) have a completely different perspective on the sampling of art materials than the music industry do. If only the music business had more music lovers it would probably be a differ story altogether. Maybe I’m just being nieve…perhaps it’s just impossible to police in the art world, maybe it’s just that there’s just more money to make from music sampling. I’m still a little stunned that Sony have had Beatallica’s site closed down for “exploiting Sony/ATV Compositions”…who the fuck were they harming? I don’t know…any thoughts? [Rant Mode: OFF]
