LED Throwies
“Developed by the Graffiti Research Lab a division of the Eyebeam R&D OpenLab, LED Throwies are an inexpensive way to add color to any ferromagnetic surface in your neighborhood. A Throwie consists of a lithium battery, a 10mm diffused LED and a rare-earth magnet taped together. Throw it up high and in quantity to impress your friends and city officials.” I think I need some of these ASAP…aren’t they just great. Don’t forget to watch the Throwies video while you’re there.

I really like them, colourful and fun.
But they also make me a little uneasy.
Lets face it, in a very genuine way we are on the brink of a climatological apocalypse due to a profligate waste of resources by the West over the last century, most of that in the last fifty years. With China and India now industrialising it maybe that no one has the political will to stop this.
Anyway it seems very wasteful of precious resources, with humanity facing what might be its final challenge.

Hi everybody. Lithium is a heavy metal (massively unfriendly to the environment and toxic). The last thing our cities need is thousands of dead LED Throwies slowly oxidizing and leeching in hard-to-reach places. So be careful where you throw ‘em!

April 22nd, 2006 at 1:08 amjames + pauli + gita. Don’t talk b*ll*cks. Lithium is not a heavy metal (it’s the 3rd lightest element, after hydrogen and helium), and isn’t massively unfriendly to the environment and toxic, well no more toxic than many of the other common elements out there.
Sheesh :)
