Macrophone
Ben Grossman, aka Macrophone, has created a piece of music that is quite unique. Aleatoric Solo Duets for Electro-Acousic Hurdy Gurdy is made up from a pair of CDs. Each disc has a collection of 12 loops of varying lengths and timbres. Each individual CD sounds exactly as you would think it would after reading the last sentence. However, that’s not the idea. What you are meant to do is to play both CDs in tandem, random and repeat. In doing so, you then hear a unique, unsynchronised, and infinitely long and varied piece of music. I’ve never heard of anyone doing this before but, like all great ideas, it seems such an obvious thing to do. On the whole, it’s too interesting to be meditative but as you would imagine, with two CDs with 24 tracks playing 2 at a time there are mellow moments as well as erratic moments and all types of other moments between. I’m sure that at some point you would hear the same tune twice at some point along the way and I’m sure there’s some way of mathematically working this out. However, I’m not clever enough to calculate it so let’s just imagine that it’s an infinite journey! If you’re interested in hearing more you can get a copy here.

The Flaming Lips did something similar to this about a decade ago.
